MT. PLEASANT —The Mt. Pleasant boys soccer team will gear up for a marquee game in the Southeast Conference on Thursday night after a big 2-1 win over the Burlington Grayhounds on Monday.
Despite playing a man down for the vast majority of the second half due to a red card, the Panther boys held on to defeat Burlington by one goal, thanks in part to two first half goals by Akbar Wilson.
Wilson’s two goals came after an early score from Burlington, which put Mt. Pleasant in a 1-0 deficit.
“Whenever something negative happens, we usually like to tuck our tails and act like it’s the end of the world,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Rocco Russo. “I thought we responded well tonight.”
Thursday will see the Panthers put their 3-0 Southeast Conference record on the line against the only other 3-0 team, in Fort Madison.
The Panther girls weren’t so lucky on Monday, taking their first SEC loss at the hands of Burlington. The Grayhounds scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second to help put the Panthers away.
The Panther girls are now 2-1 in the conference and will look to right the ship at Fort Madison (2-0-1) on the road Thursday evening.
