MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team had a mountain of a task in front of them on Tuesday night. The Panthers welcomed in a red-hot, first-place Keokuk team, and the game turned out much like the Chiefs’ past three Southeast Conference contests.
Keokuk won its fourth-straight SEC game, beating Mt. Pleasant 74-14 at Mt. Pleasant Community High School.
The Panthers fell behind early, as Keokuk’s high-pressure defense turned into a 33-2 lead in the first quarter.
“It is very frustrating,” said Panther assistant coach Aimee Iverson. “They're a great team. They're aggressive, and they give it their all.”
The Panthers were without multiple normal rotation players due to injury. Head coach Curt Watson still is out, but may return later this week.
The Chiefs led 35-4 after one quarter and 52-8 at halftime.
Mt. Pleasant had three players colead the squad in points. Abby Carthey, Paityn Ensminger and Kynlee White scored four points each. Addison Peck finished with two.
Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-8 overall. The Panthers are 0-4 in conference play. The Panthers will play on Thursday against Holy Trinity Catholic.
