MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team was the latest victim to Holy Trinity Catholic’s dynamic defense on Thursday night, as the Panthers dropped a non-conference battle to the crusaders at Mt. Pleasant Community High School.
Holy Trinity had given up 25 points or less in its last three games coming into Thursday’s contest, and the Crusaders did it yet again, beating the Panthers 50-18.
It was Mt. Pleasant’s sixth loss in a row, all to teams with an above .500 record. Four of those teams currently have two losses or less.
“I don't know what the overall record of the team's we've played is, but it's pretty darn good,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson. “It's hopefully going to get easier, but we still have to be better.”
Mt. Pleasant’s defense was stout in the first half, but the offense could never get rolling. Holy Trinity outscored Mt. Pleasant 15-6 in the first quarter and 9-0 in the second.
“The effort was there in the first half,” Watson said. “We kind of just let it get away in the last minute and a half.”
Mt. Pleasant scored 12 points in the second half, but Holy Trinity consistently put up 13 in each of the final two periods.
“We've just got to put the ball in the basket,” Watson said. “It's been a struggle all year for us. We need everybody to be an offensive threat.”
Abby Carthey led the team with five points. Kynlee White and Alexa Fuller scored three each. Myah Starr, Addison Peck and Linzy Striegle all finished with two.
The Panthers are now 1-9 overall and 0-4 heading into winter break.
