MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday night, dropping West Burlington 42-37 to scoop up the Panthers’ first win since Jan. 12.
The Panthers worked back from a 20-19 halftime deficit to take a double-digit lead, scoring 17 points in the third quarter to grab a 36-26 advantage.
West Burlington, however, came clawing back in the fourth. A shooting drought for Mt. Pleasant led to West Burlington getting the Panther lead all the way down to one point.
Leading 40-37 with time winding down, Mt. Pleasant needed one more stop to secure the victory, when Haylay Lydolph stepped up and forced a jump ball. That led to two free throws by Abby Carthey, who iced the game and finished with a team-leading 16 points.
“It took a lot of team work,” said Carthey after the game. “We’ve been working on finding the open person to pass the ball and break the press, and keep on moving the ball in the zone.”
Lydolph, Kynlee White and Paityn Ensminger each scored six points in the win. Myah Starr and Abigail Shelangoski scored four points apiece.
The Panther girls finished the regular season 4-16. Mt. Pleasant will find out its regional tournament assignment on Thursday.
