The Mt. Pleasant girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over Clear Creek Amana at home.
The Panther boys were not so lucky as they were defeated by the Clippers on the road 4-0.
In the girls’ contest, the Panthers and Clippers were neck and neck through the majority of the match.
Through much of the first half, the two teams traded the ball back and forth across midfield, but neither could find space in the others back line.
It wasn’t until the 10:48 mark that the Panthers final broke through.
The Panthers 2023-24 leading assister and points scorer in Charice Auwerda found space on the right side of the box. That’s all she needed.
Auwerda finished off the run by drilling the ball past the CCA goalkeeper into the left side of the net.
That proved to be the game winner as no other goals were had. The Panther defense proved that it can hang with anyone. Couple that with the play of goalkeeper Eli Heaton, who finished with six saves in the win, and Mt. Pleasant will look to rack up the wins.
The Panther girls move to 1-0-1 with the win. They will take on Columbus/WMU (0-2) on Monday.
On the boys’ side, CCA kept the Mt. Pleasant offense in check. The Panthers did get 10 shots off, but just four were on target. Meanwhile the Clippers scored a pair in both the first and second half on their way to the win.
For the Panthers, Xachary LeBlanc finished with eight saves.
