Panther girls top Denny White Relays
Mt. Pleasant clips Clippers by 1 point in final standings; Van Buren County boys get 2nd

MT. PLEASANT — The 2023 Denny White Relays saw a plethora of Union area athletes prevail in a packed co-ed meet at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday, but in the end, just one took home a team title.
That team was the Mt. Pleasant girls, which had an absolute battle to the bitter end with Clear Creek-Amana. The Panthers scored 184 points on the day to nip the Clippers by one.
On the boys’ side, Washington edged Mt. Pleasant 114-113 to finish third and fourth respectively in Class A. Van Buren County scored 126 to take second in Class B, a whole 42 points better than third-place WACO.
The Mt. Pleasant girls had a huge night in the sprints, winning all three of them. Andi Scott swept the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, crossing in 13.71 seconds and 27.68 seconds respectively. Elsie Lange finished first in the 400-meter dash, crossing in 1:05.67.
Mt. Pleasant had two winners in the field. Josie Gilmore took the high jump, clearing 5 foot, 1 inch. Savannah Slobodnik continued her early tear by winning the discus throw with a hurl of 108 feet, 2 inches.
Mt. Pleasant had two relay winners in girls competition. The 4X200 team of Courtney Raub, Bailey Jalas, Tristian Shull and Andi Scott won in 1:50.92. The distance medley quartet of Olivia McCormick, Alex Scott, Meadow Carter and Abby Carthey won in 4:36.95.
The Class A boys competition saw Washington and Mt. Pleasant each pull off three wins as they competed for third place on the night.
The Demons had a winner in Brayden Hartman, who took the discus throw with a final mark of 149 feet, 4 inches.
Washington had two relay wins. The 4X800 squad of Logan McDole, Drew Horak, Micah Rees and Andrew Ress won, in 8:29.59, and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Tayven Stuart, Mason Morgan, Aidan Ulin and Austin Rebling took first, in 1:04.00.
Washington’s Josh Anderson was a lone wolf in the wheelchair events. He took first in the 100 meters, crossing in 21.95 seconds. He won the 200 meters in 41.78 seconds, and then crossed first in the 400, with a time of 1:28.15.
Mt. Pleasant had two wins in the field to anchor its day. Avin Truong finished first in the long jump, leaping 20 feet, 11 inches, and Isaac Jerrel was tops in the shot put, throwing it 51 feet, 5.50 inches.
Class B’s second-place Van Buren County squad racked up the Top-3 finishes, but had just one winner on the day. The sprint medley team of Bryce Moquin, Lucas Fett, Dominic Meierotto and Anthony Duncan took first, crossing in 1:40.72.
WACO picked up three wins on the day, all in short-distance events. Clayton Miller won the 200-meter dash in 24.82 seconds. Simeon Reichenbach took the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.69 seconds, and the shuttle hurdle squad of Mason Miller, Isaac Oswald, Louden Huisenga and Reichenbach took first in 1:04.91.
Winfield-Mount Union’s Cam Buffington was a double-winner, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.81 seconds, and the long jump by leaping 21 feet, 4 inches. Gabriel Hemsworth cruised in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in 55.76 seconds.
New London’s Kade Benjamin had a dominant run through the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 7 inches to beat all competitors.
Cardinal had two winners on the day, both in the relays. The Comets’ 4X200 team of Archer Metcalf, Montana Rupe, Bradley Snook and Isaac Lett won, in 1:35.75. The distance medley team of Lett, Rupe, Metcalf and Gavin Van Vee won in 3:44.77.
