BURLINGTON — The Mt. Pleasant basketball teams went to Burlington in search of a couple of Southeast Conference wins, but both squads came up empty in the league’s first night of action.
The Panther girls fell to the 11th-ranked (4A) Grayhounds, but stuck around for most of the game, dropping the contest 71-56, and the Panther boys lost 59-42.
The girls trailed 39-22 at halftime, but outscored the Grayounds in the final two quarters of play, a hopeful sign of good things to come.
“I told the girls in the locker room that I was really proud of their effort,” said Panther girls coach Curt Watson. “If we put that much effort into all the games, we’re going to compete with everybody.”
The Panthers had a balanced scoring attack, led by Abigail Shelangoski, who put up 12 points. Abby Carthey and Haylay Lydolph scored 11 apiece. Paityn Ensminger had eight. Kynlee White scored seven. Avery Fedler put up four, and Myah Starr had three.
The Panther girls were done in by Burlington’s senior duo of Daphne Brown and Mylee Stiefel, who combined for 50 points, with Brown dropping 26 and Stiefel putting up 24.
The Panther boys had a tough night offensively. Mt. Pleasant trailed 16-11 after one quarter, 28-17 at halftime and 50-29 after three quarters.
Isaiah Lange led Mt. Pleasant with 16 points in the loss. Grayson Lowery had nine points. Keegan Heaton finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Carter Gehling finished with five. Kaden Schadt put up two, and both Brody Clark and Aiden Humble finished with one.
Both the Panther boys and girls are now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in SEC play.
