Hannah Hess is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther volleyball team.
Hess had 36 kills last season and is emerging as one of the key hitters for Mt. Pleasant. She is also a member of the Panther girls' soccer team.
Hess met with The News on Wednesday after practice. The questions are in bold with her answers following.
Did you grow up in Mt. Pleasant? No. I was actually born in Aurora Ill., which is a little outside of Chicago. I moved to Mt. Pleasant when I was eight.
How long have you been playing volleyball? I've been playing since seventh grade. I started in middle school and I did Rush for like two years, and I've been playing ever since.
Do you have plans for after high school? I'm still undecided on what college I want to do, but I know I want to major in environmental science and hopefully become, like an environmental engineer.
What is your favorite volleyball memory? Probably Maggie Cristoforo being, like really stupid (laughing). Or I guess just playing with my friends. Everyone on my team is one of my close friends. It's always a good time.
What's the worst you've ever seen someone get spiked in the face? I actually got a really bad facial last year at a tournament, and it went completely across the court. Other than that, I did see one time where Mikaela Foecke gave a girl a concussion.
What happens when you get spiked in the face? You just have to pretend it doesn't hurt, or what? You just have to take the embarrassment! There's not much you can do.
On long bus rides, who is your seat buddy? Anni Liechty. Always.
Aren't you staying with the Liechtys? Yeah! My parents moved to Chicago for a job, so I'm living with the Liechtys for the rest of my senior year.
Have you ever made them late to practice or vice versa? (Laughing) It's kind of like that every single day. One of us is running late for something. But it's a lot of fun!
If you were running for president and had to pick someone on your team to be your running mate, who would you choose? I'd have to go with Anni, probably, because we work together pretty well.
Do you have any nicknames? Yeah, I've got a couple. My friends like to call me 'ditzy” or something. I'm kind of an airhead sometimes!
Do you have any superstitions? I really shouldn't have them, but I do get some. If I don't hit the ball a certain time before I serve, or I have to be breathing a certain way. Like exhale when I hit.
So it's like your rhythm? Yeah! It's a rhythm thing I have.
If you had to give up one food group for the rest of your life, what would you choose? Probably vegies, I'd say. They're not my favorite anyway.
Favorite movie or TV show? My favorite TV show is 'Grey's Anatomy” or 'The Office.” It's between those two.
Depending on if you want to be super depressed or laugh really hard? Yeah, exactly!
Have you ever met anyone famous? I feel like I have, but I can't think of any. One time Obama drove past Mt. Pleasant, and I saw his limo.
If you could pick a celebrity to hang out with for a whole day, who would you choose? Probably Halsey. She's a singer. She's just really dope.
I don't think I've ever heard of her. What does she sing? She sings like, alternative music. Yeah, she's really cool.
What would you guys do? I don't know! I'd have her take me to her house, something like that.
What if you could pick a super-power? Probably invisibility, so that I can just sneak around all the time.
Would you eavesdrop on people? Oh yeah! Definitely.
Who's your favorite teacher? It's between Mr. Maynard, Mr. DePriest and Mrs. Lutovsky. I'm sorry, I can't choose one!
Do you have any shout outs? I'm going to shout out my mom and dad. I don't know if they still get the Mt. Pleasant newspaper where they're at, but I'll shout out my parents.
Panther Profile is a series of interviews with Mt. Pleasant athletes currently in season. This season will focus on members of the Panther cross-country, football and volleyball teams.
