MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant girls soccer put together a spectacular performance on the pitch Monday night against Keokuk.
The Panthers bombarded the Chiefs offensively and coupled that with some stingy defense in a 7-1 victory.
Junior Hailey Parrott got the Panthers going in the Southeast Conference (SEC) clash.
The Chiefs were able to tie it midway through the first half, but that’s as close as they would come.
From 7:40 to the end of the first it was the Charice Auwerda show on the offensive end of the field.
The sophomore notched a hattrick in that time span.
“I was seeing a lot of open space from the corners in and Elly (Manning) was making a run and just doing her thing,” Auwerda said. “Tori (Wilson) did great too. Our one and two game was working. I think we just played really good offense and our defense was great as well.”
Auwerda scored at 7:40, 5:48 and again with just 22.3 seconds remaining to make it 4-1 heading into halftime.
Mt. Pleasant never let off the gas.
After going just under 20 minutes without scoring, Hailey Parrot picked up her second of the game with 27:56 on the clock making it 5-1.
Four minutes later, the Panthers put another into the back of the net. This time senior Elly Manning slipped it pass the Chief keeper to make it 6-1.
Any semblance of offense by Keokuk was thwarted by the Mt. Pleasant backline and Eli Heaton grabbed anything that got close to the goal.
The Panthers day was capped off by Auwerda once again finding the net.
Along with their scoring, Auwerda and Parrott both had one assist. Aurora Hummell and Tori Wilson had Aurora Hummell tallied an assist as well. Manning finished with a pair of assists.
Mt. Pleasant improves to 3-1 on the season and will take on Burlington (2-2) on Thursday away from home.
“We just need to make some really precise passes against Burlington on that turf,” Auwerda said. “I think we need to continue focusing on those one and twos. Make the defense come to you and then pass it off for an easy goal.”
