MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant softball team gave Burlington a little scare, midway through Thursday’s Southeast Conference clash, but in the end, the Panthers couldn’t pull off an upset at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday.
The Grayhounds came into town for a one-game SEC battle, the first between the two teams this year. Mt. Pleasant was looking for their second SEC win, and had a shot when the game was tied up halfway through the contest.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Mt. Pleasant’s Paityn Ensminger delivered the big hit, knocking in both Bella Dodds and Jolynn Martin to knot the game up at 2-2.
Burlington, however, got out of the jam after that, and scored the next seven runs. The Grayhounds broke the tie with a two-run fifth, added one in the sixth, and poured on four in the seventh.
Mt. Pleasant’s Chaley Cook pitched a complete game and struck out four batters, giving up nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks to get tagged with the loss.
At the plate, Keagyn Coleman led the Panthers with two hits. Ensminger was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and both Dodds and Martyn had one hit.
The loss dropped Mt. Pleasant to 1-5 in SEC play. Burlington is 3-3, tied with Fort Madison for third, behind conference leading Washington (6-0) and second-place Fairfield (4-2).
