Panther softball goes 2-0 in weekend games

LETTS - The Mt. Pleasant softball team picked up a couple of nonconference wins over the weekend at Louisa-Muscatine High School. The Panthers defeated Wilton 3-2 in their first game and ran away from Columbus 8-1.
Wilton scored two early runs to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Mt. Pleasant wasn't able to catch up until the sixth inning when they scored all three of their runs.
Samantha Broeker had the big hit of the day, bringing home two runs to tie the game up. Mia Herrick had the game-winning RBI togive the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Broeker finished 1-1 with two RBIs to lead the team. Anni Liechty, Trinity Krabill and Sydni Coleman each scored a run.
Coleman had a good outing in the circle. She went six innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out one batter.
The Panthers needed only 4.5 innings to take out Columbus. The Panthers scored three runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third. The Wildcats scored their only run in the fourth.
Liechty threw four no-hit innings to earn the win. She gave up one unearned run and walked five batters, while striking out four.
Coleman went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Liechty was 1-2 with two RBIs. Broeker went 1-3 with two RBIs. Krabill was 2-3 with an RBI. Makayla Cam went 1-2 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Ava Lowery was 2-2 with a double and two runs scored, and Savana Walls went 1-2 with a run scored.
The Panthers are scheduled to open Southeast Conference play in Keokuk tonight (Tuesday). If the weather holds up, the Panthers and Chiefs will play two softball games and two baseball games.
