BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant softball headed to Burlington on Monday night for a Southeast Conference battle with Class 4A’s No. 9 Burlington.
The Panthers did well to limit the SEC leading Grayhounds at the plate, but struggled to get the bats going themselves in the doubleheader falling 4-0 in game one and 12-0 in the second.
In game one, Burlington scored just one run in the first two innings and it stayed that way through the fourth as Mt. Pleasant sophomore Tyi Alter gave great effort giving up just four hits with one strikeout through four frames.
In the fifth, one swing of the bat changed the game.
A two-run home run in the fifth led to a 4-0 advantage that the Grayhounds wouldn’t lose.
Mt. Pleasant continued to put the ball in play at the plate, but they could only manage one hit throughout the game on a two-out single from freshman Addison Clark.
Freshman Myah Starr closed out the game for the Panthers.
In game two, the Grayhounds found their groove at the plate, while the Panthers continued to struggled notching just a pair of hits in the game.
The Grayhounds knocked in five runs in the first inning on a trio of hits and a pair of errors.
An inning later and Burlington made it 8-0 with a trio of runs and the Grayhounds sealed it in the third with four more.
Senior Jersey Beachy and eighth-grader Jolynn Martin each picked up hits for the Panthers.
Martin was in the circle for the Panthers.
She gave up 12 runs, just five earned, on nine hits, four walks and one strikeout.
With the pair of losses, the Panthers drop to 4-13 on the season and 1-7 in SEC play.
The Panthers will get another shot at Burlington on Thursday as they will wrap up the season series with the Grayhounds.
