Panther volleyball wins twice
Mt. Pleasant scoops up one win in Ottumwa triangular, beats Fairfield in Grinnell

OTTUMWA — The Mt. Pleasant volleyball team played five games over three days between Thursday and Saturday, and the Panthers already have a couple of victories in their belt.
The Panthers started the year out at the Ottumwa triangular on Thursday. Mt. Pleasant was knocked off in straight sets against the hosting Bulldogs, falling 25-11 and 25-15, but bounced back with a thrilling three-set victory over Davis County.
After dropping the opening set 26-24 against the Mustangs, Mt. Pleasant pulled out the next two. The Panthers won the second set 25-19 and finished their night off with a 15-11 win in Set 3.
The win over Davis County was paced by a seven-kill game for Addison Clark. Alex Scott finished wish six kills. Myah Starr had four, and Kynlee White had three.
Abby Carthey dished out a team-leading 12 assists for the Panthers. Clark led the team with 10 digs.
Two days later, Mt. Pleasant had its first game against Highway 34 rival Fairfield, beating the Trojans in three sets during the Grinnell tournament.
The Panthers and Trojans played in one of the tightest games of the entire day. Mt. Pleasant won the first set, 23-21, but Fairfield zoomed to a 21-14 second set to send it to Game 3.
Like with Davis County two days prior, Mt. Pleasant closed the match out strong, winning thee deciding set 15-8.
In the win over Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant was led by Scott’s eight kills. Starr had seven, and Clark finished with six. Carthey dished out 11 assists.
The win for Mt. Pleasant over Fairfield was the only victory for either in the Grinnell tournament.
Mt. Pleasant is 2-3 going into the Southeast Conference opener against Keokuk on Tuesday night.
