MT. PLEASANT — After a ridiculous seven-game overtime streak between the Mt. Pleasant and Washington girls soccer teams, Thursday’s game finally ended in regulation.
On the Panthers’ senior night, Mt. Pleasant won 3-0 over the rival Demons, earning revenge for a shoot out loss earlier this year.
“It's awesome to finally get it done in regular time,” said lone Mt. Pleasant senior Elly Manning. “Every single time I've played them, we've gone into overtime, if not double overtime or PKs. I said, for my senior night, let's not go into overtime. Let's get it done.”
Manning had two goals in the game, one in the first half and one in the second. She was out with an injury the last time the two teams played.
“It was really rough,” Manning said. “I've got to have surgery before the season is over, so it is obviously more painful. But I think I'm in more pain sitting on the bench watching.”
Manning’s two goals sandwiched one by Hailey Parrott, which took place with 3:47 remaining in the second half.
Shortly after Washington goalkeeper Aleigha Medley made a big save on a direct kick by Manning, the Panthers capitalized on one by Charise Auwerda, who was robbed via a Medley jumping save. Parrott put the rebound in, which at that time made it 2-0 Mt. Pleasant.
The game stayed 2-0 until Manning’s second goal, which came off a one-on-one with Medley in the final 9 minutes.
Washington had a few shots to score, including a rocket by Amerie Cuevas, which was saved by Mt. Pleasant’s Eli Heaton right before the end of the half, but the Demons could never get onto the score book.
“We've been struggling here a bit lately, of scoring,” said Washington head coach Mason Quigley. “We're just in a little slump right now, but better now than it would be at the end of the season.”
The now extinct seven-game overtime streak began on April 22, 2019 when Mt. Pleasant beat Washington 1-0 in an overtime game. The Demons later repaid the Panthers with a 2-1 golden-goal win in Mt. Pleasant.
Over the seven game streak, Washington won four games and Mt. Pleasant won three. The last time the two teams had ended a game in regulation came when Mt. Pleasant beat Washington 4-0 on May 10, 2018.
