BURLINGTON — After a disappointing ending to Friday night’s game, the Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team needed a boost on Monday night in Burlington, and the Panthers got it at Faither Minnett Gymnasium.
The Panthers played their best defensive game of the season, holding Notre Dame to seven points or less in all four quarters of a 33-22 victory.
Though the defense did shine, Mt. Pleasant’s offense was also held to seven or less in three of the four quarters. After splitting the first period 6-6, however, Mt. Pleasant put up 14 in the second period alone, and it was a 20-10 halftime lead.
Notre Dame traded baskets with Mt. Pleasant for the entire second half, but that wasn’t good enough to make up for the Panther’s second-period dominance.
Abby Carthey led Mt. Pleasant with nine of the Panthers’ 33 points. Overall, the defense held the Nikes to under 21% shooting.
The Panthers are now 3-8 on the season. They’ll try to improve on an 0-5 Southeast Conference record on Friday night at home against Burlington.
