The Mt. Pleasant boys' tennis team began the 2019 season on Tuesday night, but not without a little adversity. The Panthers dropped their first game of the year, 6-3 to Ft. Madison.
Mt. Pleasant lost four out of six singles matches and dropped two of three doubles matches to move to 0-1 to start the year.
Jack Schimmelpfennig and Clayton Henriksen were the two singles winners for Mt. Pleasant. Schimmelpfennig took down Ft. Madison's Bryce Workman in the No. 5 match, and Henricksen beat Levi Sissel 8-3 in the No. 6 match.
The Panthers lost the top four singles matches. Corbin Broeker was narrowly defeated, 9-7, in the No. 1 match against Sam Avery. Jaxon Hoyle lost to Jason Thurman, 8-3, in the No. 2 match. Donny Arledge dropped a match 8-3 to Vasin Thurman in the No. 3 match, and David Nguyen fell to Reed Fehseke 8-4 in the No. 4 match.
The team of Arledge and Henriksen picked up a win in the No. 3 doubles match, defeating Workamn and Sissell 8-2. Broeker and Hoyle fell 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles match, falling to the Thurmans. Nguyen and Schimmelpfennig lost 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match, falling victim to Avery and Fehseke.
Mt. Pleasant's girls' team was originally scheduled to play at Ft. Madison on Tuesday, but the game was postponed due to the untimely death of one of the Bloodhound players.
The tennis teams will be back in action on Thursday, March 28. The boys' team will host Davis County in a nonconference game, and the girls will play at Notre Dame in Burlington.
