Mt. Pleasant softball’s regular season came to a close last week with a pair of matchup against West Burlington-Notre Dame on Wednesday and Southeast Conference champion No. 13 (Class 4A) Burlington on Friday.
Both end results were not in the Panthers’ favor as they lost to WB-ND 15-2 and Burlington 11-0.
In the Panther’s matchup with WB-ND, they struggled to limit the Falcons offense as WB-ND scored runs in five straight innings to begin the game.
The Falcons scored a trio of runs in the first two innings, but the real damage was done over the third and fourth frames. During that span, the Falcons scored a whopping 10 runs.
Mt. Pleasant scored a run each in those two inning as well. Lila Cook and Linzy Striegel both notched runs for the Panthers.
That’s all the Panthers could put on the board as the Falcons scored another two in the fifth as insurance.
Keagyn Coleman went 2-for-3 for Mt. Pleasant. Kynlee White, Lila Cook and Izzy Sloat all had hits as well.
Against Burlington, the Panthers just couldn’t find a rhythm in the batters box.
Facing Burlington ace Saydee Plummer, the Panthers failed to get a hit and struck out 12 times.
It was a tough night for the Panthers all around as six errors caused the brunt of the damage. Of the 11 Burlington runs, six were earned.
The Panthers defense showed what they are capable of despite the 11 run loss, holding the Grayhounds to runs in just two of five innings.
However, Burlington scored five in the second and six more in the fourth to pull out the Southeast Conference victory.
Mt. Pleasant finishes the regular season 3-27 and SEC play 1-14. The Panthers will take on Central DeWitt (8-26) in their first game of the postseason. That game will be on the road on Thursday.
