The Mt. Pleasant boys? golf team came in just two strokes ahead of Washington to defeat the Demons, 162-164, in the season opener for both teams.
Quinn Daniel led the Panthers with a score of 39 on the team?s home course at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.
Each of the Panthers? other three scorers ? Patrick Zielinski, Kiley Miller and Ross Heitmeier ? shot a 41 on the day.
?We didn?t shoot our best ? these are early season scores,? Mt. Pleasant Coach Jamy Ball said.
The Demons were led by medalist Alex Thode, who shot a 38: two over par for the course.
Brock Kimball and Dillon de Perrott each shot a 40, and Ryan Waite came in at 46 for Washington.
?It was pretty good for us to come away with a win there,? Ball said. ?It?s a great boost for us.?
The Demons were the state runner-up last season, and return five of their top six golfers.
Washington was missing one of those returners, Jake Redlinger, who splits time between golf and track. He was participating in the Demon Relays yesterday.
The Panthers will face the full Washington team on Thursday, when they play on the Demons? home course.
First, however, the Panthers travel to Davis County on Monday, where they will play against Davis County and Chariton. That meet begins at 4:15 p.m.
