MT. PLEASANT — After dropping its first game of the season, the Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team grabbed its first victory of the season on Monday night against Notre Dame.
The Panthers defeated the Nikes 45-40 in the out of conference bout, in large part to 18 second half points from Kynlee White.
It was Notre Dame who held the advantage for much of the first half. In-fact, Mt. Pleasant held just one lead through the opening 16 minutes at 6-5.
Through that span, the Nikes lead was never more than six as the Panthers kept it close.
Mt. Pleasant was down just two, 10-8, at the first quarter buzzer as Addison Clark found Paityn Ensminger for a pair with just 1.2 seconds on the clock.
To start the second, Notre Dame scored back-to-back baskets to make it a six point game, 14-8, its largest lead of the night.
However, Myah Starr drilled a shot from beyond the arc, sparking a 6-0 run from the Panthers to tie it at 14-14.
The Nikes didn’t let them get in front though, ending the frame on a 5-2 run themselves to make it 19-16 at the break.
In the second half, the Panther’s White went to work.
White scored the first six points of the third quarter to give the Panthers a 22-19 lead, but they couldn’t pull away.
Through the final four minutes of the third, the Panthers and Nikes tied three times with two’s from Alexa Fuller and Abigail Shelangoski knotting it at 31-31 heading into the fourth.
Notre Dame, took the lead once more through the first two minutes of the fourth on a free throw, but then it was all Mt. Pleasant.
White and Clark scored every point for the Panthers in the fourth quarter with White scoring 10 of the Panthers 14 in the frame.
Mt. Pleasant led by as much as nine 43-34 in the fourth.
Notre Dame put on the press late and was able to get it down to four, but the Panthers were able to hold on.
