PACKWOOD ? The Panther baseball train showed no signs of slowing down Monday night, and may have even picked up some speed, while steamrolling through WACO with 15-0 and 12-0 victories.
Leading the charge for Pekin, as they have been all season, was Zach Mosbey and Trenton Northup. Mosbey was 4-7 and Northup was 4-8 on the evening as they raised their season averages to .513 and .479, respectfully. Mosbey and Northup have astronomical slugging percentages of .872 and .863.
As long as head coach Jeff Eeling contends that ?hitting is contagious? the rest of the lineup should follow ? a lineup that is now hitting over .300 on the year.
While the Pekin bats pounded away for 27 runs on the evening, Chase Chapman and Northup controlled things from the mound. Chapman struck out six and allowed three hits to earn a three-inning game one win while Northup fanned 13 batters and allowed just one hit in six innings of work in game two.
?Trenton is a true utility man for us being our catcher, playing second base, playing shortstop and then stepping in to pitch. Then add in what he does for us at the plate and he?s so big for our team,? Eeling said.
In game one, Mosbey drove in five of the Panther runs and set the pace for a Pekin offense that went 13-23 for the game. Brady Lamb also had a multi-hit game while he and AJ Neff drove in two runs apiece. In game two, Northup and sophomore Trevor Davis totaled three RBIs each. Dalton Stone was also 2-4 with a double.
?We?ve been struggling a little bit with soft pitching, but last night, we hit it well. It?s nice to see the guys maturing as hitters and shows that we can still make adjustements,? said Eeling. ?That?s a good sign for us as we head into tournament play.?
Pekin will play a doubleheader at Lone Tree tonight to round out the conference season before its final regular season game Wednesday at home against Cardinal.
