MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant and Maharishi tennis teams came into Tuesday’s clash at East Lake Park with unbeaten records, but only one team could stay that way when the Panthers and Pioneers had their first showdown of the season.
In one of the tightest battles of the season, it was Mt. Pleasant that came out on top, nipping Mahrishi 5-4 to stay perfect on the season.
The Pioneers won three of the first four games in the singles competition. Ruimin Luo took out Mt. Pleasant’s Owen Vansickel 10-5 in the No. 1 match. Polo Altynski-Ross beat Phoenix Watson 10-6 in the No. 3 match, and Han Wang defeated Tim Cam 10-3 in the No. 4 match, but the Panthers got three back the other way.
Mt. Pleasant’s Elliot Cook scooped up a 10-3 victory over Mahrishi’s Jayanta Wegman in the No. 2 singles match. Gavin Ross defeated Gabriel Roesler 10-3 in the No. 5 match, and Lou Schimmelpfennig beat Sviat Oleksiienko 10-3 in the No. 6 match.
Mt. Pleasant’s Ross and Schimmelpfennig won by default in the No. 3 doubles match to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead. Luo and Wegman beat Vansickel and Cook 10-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, which tied things up at 4-4 with just one doubles match remaining.
In the final match, it was Watson and Cam of Mt. Pleasant versus Altynski-Ross and Wang of Maharishi. In a game that went into extra sets, the Panthers pulled out a thrilling 11-9 victory.
Mt. Pleasant moved to 6-0 with the win. They’ll host Keokuk on Thursday. Maharishi dropped to 2-1, and will welcome in Fairfield High on Thursday in a crosstown clash.
