WASHINGTON — It was a historic day for the Mt. Pleasant wrestling teams on Thursday night. Both the Panther boys and girls beat rival Washington in an intense Southeast Conference dual at Washington High School.
The Panther boys jumped on top of the Demons early en route to a 51-27 victory. The Mt. Pleasant girls won two of three actual matches and piled up the forfeit wins to take down the Demons 27-12.
"It was definitely a good win for the team in general," said Panther boys' head coach Anthony Blint. "I don't know the date the last time we won here. It's been years ago, so it's good for the whole team."
Among the wins for the Panther boys included pins for Keegan Birdsell, Payton Walker, Levi Evans, Cruz Aguilar, Lane Beckler and Kolbein Ostby. Ramzy Davis had a technical fall, and Landon Beckler won by major decision.
"That was awesome for the team, the coaches and everybody," Blint said.
Washington had a few toss ups go its way on the boys' side, but overall, Coach Justin Chambers says there were some learning moments.
"The biggest thing is, you've just got to keep wrestling through positions," Chambers said. "There were times when we did a nice job of that, we were successful, and we scored some points. Then, there were times when we got into offensive scoring positions, and we had a split second of indecision."
The Panther girls were going to win anyway, due to forfeits, but Mt. Pleasant did pick up two big ones on the mat. Paris Phosy had a pin for Mt. Pleasant, and Zenlynn Lee won a 1-0 nail-biter over Washington's Peggy Miller.
"We just go out there with the mindset to put the things from practice onto the mat," said Mt. Pleasant girls coach Abby Blint.
It was the first time for the Panther girls to be wrestling a dual at rival Washington. Dual meets on the girls' side have started to be phased in with the sanctioning of the sport two years ago.
"They definitely learned being aggressive pushes forward the match," said Panther girls' co-coach Jayden Housh. "Also relaxing too. You have to have a healthy balance of both."
