Boys basketball on the high school circuit Friday saw Pekin's Brock Long nearly outscore the other team on its own floor.
Pekin nearly doubles Ravens
KALONA - The Panthers climbed past Hillcrest in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division game 61-33. Brock Long nearly equaled the home team's total as he put up 29 points and was responsible for another eight at least as he handed out four assists while taking six steals for the Panthers.
The game was close, with Pekin leading 20-14 after a quarter, until the Ravens mustered just five points in the second period and two in the third to trail 54-21 starting the fourth.
The defense of Brayden Sobaski may have had something to do with the Ravens scoring as he had seven blocked shots and filled up the Pekin stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds and four steals. Brady Millikin had seven assists to go with his five points and Panthers teammate Chandler Stull added six points, five rebounds with three steals. Cael Lyle tallied seven points with five rebounds.
Comets run away from rival Warriors
ELDON - Cardinal pulled away late with a SEISC South Division victory over Van Buren County, toppling the visitors 63-48.
Dawson Lewis had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Elias Elammari had 18 as Cardinal secured its fourth win in the last five games.
Jackson Manning scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Warriors, who have yet to secure a win in their six games this season
Tigers alone atop the South
NEW LONDON - First place in the South was on the line when rivals Danville and New London put their 4-0 division records against each other. New London dominated from start to finish and walked out with a 52-38 win.
The Tigers had a double-digit lead, 19-8, after the first quarter then led 30-14 at halftime and 38-27 after three quarters.
Sophomores Kade Benjamin and Blaise Porter haunted the Tigers' chief rivals all night. Benjamin finished with 20 points and Porter had 18. Devin Swanson scored eight points. Cam Kasel had four and Caydin Wahls finished with two.
Ugly start dooms Wolves
WAPELLO - Winfield-Mt. Union played undefeated Wapello tight in the final three quarters, but the opening eight minutes were the story. Wapello led 20-3 after the first quarter and won the game 59-40.
It was WMU's first loss since an opening-night defeat to Pekin.
Cam Buffington tallied 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wolves. Abram Edwards had 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Jacob Kongable added six.
Wilton wallops Wildcats
COLUMBUS JUNCTION - Columbus fell to Wilton Thursday in a nonconference game 65-29.
A short bench saw Columbus dress only seven players. Justus Lekwa led Columbus with 11 points, including three 3-point baskets. Mason Hodges and Brody Frost added seven points apiece.
Columbus goes to Lone Tree tonight.
Huskies dumped at Danville
DANVILLE - Highland got its season's second game Thursday but lost 69-27 to the Bears in an SEISC nondivisional game.
