WEST BURLINGTON - The Mt. Pleasant and Pekin girls track and field teams put the paws on the rest of the schools at the Falcon Relays Tuesday.
Both schools have Panthers as the mascot, and the claws were out as both teams pounced on the field with titles in their respective classes. Mt. Pleasant won Class A with 143.5 points, and Pekin dominated Class B, winning with 196 points.
Mt. Pleasant had to out-duel a Class A field that included Fairfield and Washington. The Trojan girls finished third, with 120 points, just one point away from second-place West Burlington-Notre Dame. The Demons were fourth with 75 points.
Mt. Pleasant scooped up a lot of points in the distance events, thanks to Abby Blint, who pulled off a double win in the longest races of the night.
Blint won the 1500-meter run in 5 minutes, 46.49 seconds, and coupled that with a win in the 3000, crossing the tape in 13:58.39.
Mt. Pleasant took the shuttle hurdle relay, their only relay win of the day. The team of Allie Westercamp, Josie Gilmore, Kenna Lamm and Karsyn Lamm beat the field with a final time of 1:11.60.
Mt. Pleasant won both Class A throwing events. Jadan Brumbaugh topped the shot put field with a throw of 41 feet even, and Grace Kelley launched the dicus for a winning distance of 116-05.
Fairfield used a strong night in the relays to finish just 23.5 points out of first place in Class A. The Trojans won the 4x800 relay and the sprint medley.
The Trojans' 4x800 team was made up of Savannah Hollander, Carley Seeley, Maddie Jones and Addison Ferrel. They won that race in 11:21.11. The sprint medley team of Danielle Breen, Mallory Lyon, Kelsey Pacha and Anna Dunlap took the top spot in 1:56.50.
Pacha picked up an individual win for the Trojans in the 100-meter hurdles. She crossed the finish line in 16.53 seconds.
Washington picked up one win on the day, and it came in the 800-meter run. Grace Voss ran past the field in that race, winning in 2:40.61.
Pekin's Panthers stalked Class B by winning more than half of the events. WACO took third, with 86 points. New London was fifth, with 45 points, and Winfield-Mount Union took sixth, with 33.
Pekin dominated in the sprints. Sarah Eubanks was a double winner, sprinting to wins in the 200-meter dash (29.15 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (1:02.83). Mackenzie Dahlstrom took the 100-meter dash, crossing in 14.25 seconds.
Pekin's Audrey Fariss won the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:39.97. Zoey Johnson added a win in the 400-meter hurdles, getting to the line in 1:16.49.
Pekin had a great night in the relays as well. They took four victories, the most of any school.
The 4x200 team of Dahlstrom, Lilly Reneker, Sabrina Reneker and Sophie Wittrock took first place in 1:56.67. The 4x400 squad of Eubanks, Lilly Reneker, Sabrina Reneker and Dahlstrom won in 4:31.04. The sprint medley squad of Dahlstrom, Claire Roth, Witrock and Eubanks took gold in 2:01.36, and the distance medley quartet of Mia Clark, Alex Parsons, Audrey Farriss and Lily Fariss won in 4:55.53.
Pekin had one win in the field events. Kerrigan Pope took first place in the discus throw, out-hurling the competition with a throw of 118-7.
The only other area Class B win came from Winfield-Mount Union's Bradie Buffington in the shot put. Buffington tossed the shot 34-5 to give the Wolves an indidivudal win.
