MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant baseball put together a very efficient night of ball on Wednesday night against Davis County.
The Panthers stayed poise despite some big hits by the Mustangs for the 11-6 victory.
Davis County got the scoring started in its first trip to the plate. The Mustangs scored a pair of runs headlined by what would be the first of two home runs in the game.
Mt. Pleasant stayed poised as they matched Davis County in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-2 heading into the second.
“The home runs hurt and it kept them in the game,” Mt. Pleasant’s Ben Newton said. “We just stayed focused and started to put runs on the board ourselves.”
The Panthers would never trail again.
They went on to score a single run in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to take a 6-2 advantage.
Davis County cut it to one, 6-5, with three itself in the top of the fourth, but the Panthers bounced back with two in their half of the frame to make it 8-5.
After a run scored by the Mustangs in the fifth, Mt. Pleasant sealed it with a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“This win feels great,” Mt. Pleasant head coach Brent Broeker said. “This is the first time these seniors have been above .500. The spirits are high right now. We’ve got some things to fix around the bases but I though we played a pretty good game tonight. We hit the ball around the park and played some solid defense.”
Ben Newton went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs. Newton also closed the game out.
J.C. Sitar also finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Zerek Venghaus went 2-for-4.
Garrett Cook and Payson Coleman each had one hit with Cook picking up an RBI.
Carter Amos had an RBI as well.
Payton Walker pitched a total of six innings, giving up six runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two strikeouts.
Payton Hagans and Ben Newton both struck out one in the game to close it.
Mt. Pleasant now sits at 10-9 on the season.
