Friday night brought the end of the season for three Union area basketball teams.
Pekin, Hillcrest Academy and Mid-Prairie all fell just short in the second round of their playoff brackets.
Pekin (12-11) fought until the end, but came up on the wrong side of the result to North Mahaska (19-4) in overtime 66-60.
Hillcrest Academy (12-11) was topped by Lynnville-Sully (21-2) 56-58.
Mid-Prairie (12-11) was defeated by Wilton (18-4) 83-61.
For Pekin, it was anyone’s game through and through the 1A Region 6 contest.
The Panthers led after one quarter 11-10, but were outscored 14-12 in the second.
Still, Pekin trailed by just one at the break, 24-23.
In the second half, the one point margin stayed true.
Pekin edged the Warhawks 14-13 in the third period to knot it at 37-37 heading into the fourth.
Both teams were stride for stride in the final quarter of regulation, as they scored 17 a piece to send it to overtime at 54-54.
North Mahaska got the better of Pekin in the extra period, 12-6 to seal it.
Hillcrest Academy got down early to Lynnville-Sully and could never get back on top in the two’s second 1A Region 6 bout.
The Ravens were down 13-8 after one quarter and the Hawks continued to stretch their lead through the second.
At the half, Hillcrest was down 27-19.
The Ravens gained some momentum in the third after outscoring the Hawks 14-12, but they still trailed 39-33 heading into the fourth.
Lynnville-Sully was able to cap off the win in the fourth though, outscoring Hillcrest Academy 17-15.
Mid-Prairie and Wilton were neck and neck through one quarter, but the Beavers took control in the second.
At the end of the first, both teams were tied at 20.
Wilton went on to outscored Mid-Prairie 25-8 in the second, making it 45-28 at halftime.
The Beavers continued to dominate in the third. Mid-Prairie was outscored 23-12 in the period, making it 68-40 going into the final quarter.
Mid-Prairie was able to edge Wilton 21-15 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.
Camron Pickard finished with 27 points for Mid-Prairie. Shawn Dodds and Ace Peck both finished with six points to lead the Golden Hawks.
