MT. PLEASANT — Fairfield soccer was looking like it was going to escape Mt. Pleasant with a Southeast Conference victory on Monday night, but some late game heroics saved the Panthers from a conference defeat, 1-1.
The conference leading Panthers held much of the possession through the first half of play, but it was Fairfield to converted on its opportunities.
It took the Trojans all but four minutes to score in the match as Noah Patel slipped the ball into the left side of the net off a pass from Ian Richards.
However, that was Fairfield’s only goal of the night. The Trojans hung onto that advantage through the rest of the first half as their defense along with Henry Swan in goal thwarted the Panthers’ attack.
The first half ended with Fairfield up 1-0.
In the second half it was more of the same between the two teams. Mt. Pleasant outshot Fairfield 14-8, 11-5 in the match, but it was the Trojans who stayed in front for nearly the entire match.
The Panthers never gave up and with just over two minutes to go they final ended the scoring drought.
Mt. Pleasant’s Dylan White kept the Panthers from suffering their first conference loss of the season with a beautiful bended shot into the right side of the net. Asa Rose assists on the goal.
With just minutes to spare the game ended with the two squad all knotted up.
With the tie, Mt. Pleasant is now 4-0-1 in SEC play. Fairfield is now 1-2-2.
