MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant softball couldn’t hold on to an early lead in Thursday night’s Southeast Conference matchup, falling to Keokuk 13-8.
The Panthers (4-22) led by two runs after three innings, but their offense went cold while the Chiefs (3-21) surged, scoring in every inning from the fourth on to complete the comeback.
Keokuk got off to a hot start with a two-run homer in the first inning, jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
Mt. Pleasant responded quickly, scoring five runs across the first and second innings to take control. After Keokuk tied it up with three runs in the third, the Panthers answered with three of their own to retake the lead at 8-6.
From there, it was all Chiefs. Keokuk added seven unanswered runs over the final four innings and racked up 19 total hits.
Mt. Pleasant managed nine hits in the loss. Saige Burchett led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Paityn Ensminger added two hits, while Chaley Cook, Bella Dodds, Izzy Sloat, and Keagyn Coleman each contributed a hit and an RBI.
With the loss, Mt. Pleasant drops to 2-10 in Southeast Conference play. The Panthers will look to bounce back when they take on Burlington on the road Monday.
