Fresh off their first win of the season and 1-0 in district play, the Panthers (1-2) look to bring their winning ways into Week 4 against West Branch (1-2).
A little revenge would be nice, too.
In last year?s meeting between Pekin and eventual 2010 district champion West Branch, Pekin was blanked 39-0 by a historically strong West Branch squad at home. Now, the Panthers are out to return the favor in West Branch?s backyard.
For the Panthers, grabbing an early lead and putting the pressure on West Branch will be key.
?I think it will be important to get out of the gates and get the lead first,? said Pekin head coach Joe Donovan.
It will be no easy task, however, as West Branch has a well-balanced squad that can makes plays on the ground and through the air.
West Branch running back Cade Jones has tallied 436 yards and four touchdowns on 58 carries, and is coming off a game last week in which he gained 275 yards on the ground. Fellow backfield mate Bo Bower rushed for 97 yards one week ago.
?They?re very athletic kids,? said Donovan. ?They have big kids on the line and athletic kids to go with them.?
For Pekin, Graham Wittrock will continue to take snaps behind center. The junior quarterback threw for 126 yards on four completions one week ago, and will be expected to expand on that performance in Week 4. Five athletes scored six touchdowns as part of a deep running game one week ago, and Quentin Garrels and Bryce Sines lead the group.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in West Branch.
