WILTON - A trifecta of Union coverage area teams were at Wilton on Saturday for a six-team tournament. Mt. Pleasant and Winfield-Mt. Union walked out with 3-2 records and Hillcrest Academy went 1-4.
Mt. Pleasant picked up wins over both Hillcrest and W-MU. The Panthers swept Hillcrest 21-17 and 21-11, and won a three-set match against W-MU 21-8, 20-22 and 15-7. Mt. Pleasant's other win came at the hands of Midland, who they swept 21-13, 21-13.
The Panthers struggled against het hosting Beavers, who are currently ranked No. 3 in the Class 2A rankings. The Panthers did flirt with a 4-1 day after beating Lisbon 21-18 in the opening set, but the Lions took the second set, 21-17, and took the winner-take-all third set, 15-11.
W-MU swept Hillcrest 21-10 and 21-11. The Wolves also picked up a sweep against Midland, winning 21-8, 21-8.
The Wolves had to grind out a three-set win against Lisbon. After dropping the first set 21-14, W-MU battled back to win the second set 21-13 and take the third, 15-10.
W-MU dropped their match against Wilton 21-11 and 21-12. During their loss to Mt. Pleasant, the Wolves played without Jenna Buffington, who still ended up leading the team with 33 total kills. Bradie Buffington had 21 kills on the night, including six against Mt. Pleasant.
Hillcrest's lone win came against Midland. The Ravens swept the Eagles 21-17 and 21-15, led by a four-kill night from Esther Hughes.
Along with their losses to Mt. Pleasant and W-MU, the Ravens were also swept by Lisbon and Wilton. Hillcrest fell 21-14, 21-13 against Lisbon and 21-7, 21-7 against Wilton.
Wilton went 5-0 to win their own home tournament and continue their undefeated season. Mt. Pleasant and W-MU shared second place with Lisbon since all three teams went 3-2. Hillcrest took fifth.
Mt. Pleasant is now 5-9 on the season, and will host Fort Madison tonight (Tuesday) in a Southeast Conference match. W-MU is 9-4, and will take on Columbus tonight in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division matchup, and Hillcrest (1-10) also will be in North Division play when they travel to Pekin.
