WASHINGTON — When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Mid-Prairie junior Ace Peck was scolding on Monday night in Washington.
Peck drained eight 3-pointers in a Washington County showdown that saw Mid-Prairie rally back from a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to knock off their inter-county rivals 62-59.
“We just came out, played well and got the win,” said Peck after the game. “It's pretty cool, especially because it's Washington.”
Peck was feeling it from the very beginning, but Washington seemed to punch back every time one of his long-range missiles hit the bottom of the net. Particularly fiery was Washington’s Roman Roth, who put in 11 points in the first quarter, helping the Demons get out to an 18-13 advantage.
The two teams traded blows in the middle quarters, but Washington kept a steady lead throughout. The Demons led 31-26 at halftime and 47-40 after three periods.
“That's something we preach, is responding,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert. “Facing that adversity is something we talk about constantly.”
The Golden Hawks rallied back to make the game a one-possession battle in the last minute-and-a-half. After a Nic Stone 3-pointer gave Washington a 59-57 advantage with just over one minute left, Peck hit his eighth long ball of the game to put Mid-Prairie on top 60-59 with under 60 ticks remaining.
Washington had its chances to go ahead or tie the game. The door was left creaked open in the final seconds, allowing Drew Conrad to heave one from three-quarters court, but the ball fell just short of the rim and Mid-Prairie walked out victorious.
After the loss, Washington head coach Collin Stark said not all the blame is on the last few possessions.
“Everyone looks at the last minute of the game,” Stark said. “There's also 31 other minutes in there, and I felt like there was opportunities in there, and I felt there were opportunities for us to take charge of the game, and we unfortunately didn't.”
It was Mid-Prairie’s first win in the rivalry since 2019. The Demons were riding a three-game winning streak into this year’s edition and had won nine of the last 10 showdowns coming in.
Peck’s 24 points came on an 8-for-14 performance from downtown. That was one made 3-pointer away from the school record.
Dylan Henry went for 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot to help anchor the Golden Hawks. Conner Wells scored eight points. Brady Weber and Bryce Henry had six points apiece. Brock Harland scored three, and Landon Kos finished with two.
Roth finished the night with 16 points for Washington. Conrad had 14. Logan McDole scored 12. Stone had nine points and Kael Williams finished with eight.
