As the season winds down, the Washington girls? golf team is turning it up.
The Demons went to Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington on Monday, and took part in a 12-team tournament, and came away with the top two individual scores at the event.
Those scores helped the Demons to a 15-stroke team win, as they scored a 342, outpacing second-place Fairfield, who posted a 357.
The next highest score was Muscatine with a 364.
?It was a good day,? Washington girls? golf head coach Leonard Kull said. ?I felt like when the meet was over, they came together as a group the way a team really should come together. That was a very positive ending. They knew they all did well and that was a big step forward team-wise.?
Leading the team on Monday was senior Deanna Peiffer, who claimed meet medalist honors for the first time this season.
Peiffer was consistent for her 18 holes, shooting a 37 on both the front and back nine to make up her 74, which gave her the win by three strokes.
?You could say it was Deanna Peiffer Day (on Monday),? Kull said. ?She played well and was excited, as she should be. She was able to come out on top of a field of 90 golfers, so I?m happy for her. She was keeping the ball in play and made a few putts. She started off a little rocky, but then off she went.?
Taking second at the meet was sophomore Sarah Nacos, who shot a 77 to tie with Fairfield?s Lyndsey Repp for meet runner-up.
?For the last year and a half, she?s done an awful lot of our heavy lifting, and she had a good score,? Kull said. ?She may think it wasn?t because she sets the bar high for herself, but it?s the difference of a few putts.?
Megan Strabala posted the third-highest score for the Demons on Monday, recording a 92, including a 43 on the front nine.
?I think this was one of the better tournaments of her career as well,? Kull said. ?She?s been coming along nicely and is doing a lot of things right. She?s doing a pretty decent job of hitting it around the green and scoring well.?
Allison Vogel accounted for the final counting score for the Demons, shooing a 99 on the day, with a 47 on the back nine.
?Alison broke 100 for the first time in a tournament,? Kull said. ?She did a great job and I was really impressed with her. This is something that is in the maturation process and she?s coming along nicely. Every time out, she learns something about herself and the game.?
Brenna Burlingame posted a 104 on the day, including a 48 on the front nine, and despite a higher than average score, Kull said she finished her round very well.
?Even though she didn?t score too well, I was impressed with her,? Kull said. ?The first 12 holes, she struggled, but she didn?t give up and she didn?t get mad. Then in the last six holes, she played as well as she could play. If we had to use her score, we would still have done well.?
Carly Burlingame finished her first 18-hole round of her career with a 116, shooting a 57 front nine and a 59 back nine.
?It was Carly?s first 18 holes, and she?s a character,? Kull said. ?She plays as hard as she can and has her emotions right on her sleeves and just has a good time. I?m really pleased with the way she?s embraced the game.?
The Demons will play at Ottumwa on Thursday afternoon, before preparing for their conference meet next Tuesday. The conference meet will be held at Washington Golf and Country Club.
