WELLMAN ? With their big meets fast approaching in the coming weeks, both the Fairfield and Pekin girls? track team have been a model of consistency as of late with each putting together another solid performance Friday at the Lady Hawk Relays hosted by Mid-Prairie.
Pekin edged Fairfield by four points and came away with a team championship even with the foursome of Kaitlin Spilman, Kristin Freeman, Annie Jones and Celsey Conger taking a light workload with a Drake Relays performance in the 4x800 relay set for Saturday morning.
Brenna Conger won the 1500-meter run for the Panthers and Jennifer Clubb (135? 3?) added another victory in the discus. Pekin once again put forth strong relays as five teams finished either first or second. Finishing first was the sprint medley (Jessi Martin, Spilman, Erin Mosinski, Kaylee Johnston), the distance medley (Mosinski, Jones, Spilman, C. Conger) and the 4x100-relay (Sterling, Martin, Emily Ellis, Johnston).
Clubb also finished second in the shot put breaking her own school record set earlier this season with a toss of 38-feet, 10-inches. Kayla Chandler was second in the 400-meter hurdles, and the 4x800 (Emma Nelson, Chandler, B. Conger, Johnston) and the 4x200 (Sterling, Martin, Johnston, Ellis) were also runners up.
Pekin ran a 9:52.60 4x800 relay at the Drake Relays Saturday that placed them 11th.
It was another team effort from Fairfield on a windy night for their second-place performance as Amanda Lamb led the way with an individual win in the 400-meter dash and an opening leg on the 4x400-relay that also finished first. Mackenzie Laux, Brittney Fry and Dana Diers also ran the 4x400 and took part in the winning 4x800 before handing off to anchor Amanda Melcher. Laux, Kiersten Vaughan, Fry and Libbey Schubert combined to win the 4x200 relay.
?We again showed balance scoring in nearly every event,? said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse. ?We?re closing in on our home meet, conference, regionals and state so we need all our girls healthy and performing at a high level.?
