Pekin gets 1st win, New London’s struggles continue

Thursday’s small school volleyball slate saw the Southeast Iowa Super Conference races heat up. Mid-Prairie also scooped up a River Valley Conference victory.
Winfield-Mount Union 3, Highland 2
The Huskies had the Wolves down 2-1, but WMU rallied back to pull out a thrilling five set win (25-12, 18-25, 14-25, 25-18, 16-14).
Audrie Gipple had 12 kills in the win. Kellee Milks finished with six kills. Aurey Meeker finished the match with a team-leading 16 assists and 15 digs.
Pekin 3, Lone Tree 1
After a few tough losses to start the season, Pekin got its first win of the season, beating Lone Tree in four sets (25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23).
Myah Bainbridge showed out with 13 kills in the win. Ava Gillam had seven kills, and Kayse Miller finished with six.
Bainbridge dished out 20 assists in the win. Alex Parsons led the way with 19 digs.
WACO 3, Louisa-Muscatine 0
The Warriors bounced the Falcons in straight sets, winning 25-13, 25-14, 25-11.
Emma Wagler led the Warriors with nine kills in the win. Zoey Dennler had four. Meredith Roth finished with 16 assists, and both Halle Shelman and Marie Farmer ended with nine digs.
Wapello 3, Hillcrest Academy 0
The Ravens couldn’t pull off a road win at SEISC North rival Wapello. The Arrows beat Hillcrest Academy 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14.
The Ravens fell to 5-5 with the loss.
Van Buren County 3, Danville 1
The Warriors had to come back to beat Danville 3-1 in SEISC North action. Van Buren County won 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23.
Ivy Davidson went off for 24 kills in the win. Marlee Mertens finished with six kills. Sophia Jirak pulled out 38 assists, and Bree Kirkhart had 15 digs.
Notre Dame 3, New London 1
The Tigers continued to struggle to put away good teams, as Notre Dame turned a 1-0 New London advantage into a four-set Nike win (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15).
New London is now 0-8 on the season with a Union-area clash with Van Buren County coming up on Tuesday.
Mid-Prairie 3, West Liberty 1
Then No. 15 Mid-Prairie showed some resilience with a comeback win over West Liberty. The Golden Hawks prevailed in four sets, winning 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.
Jovi Evans continued her red-hot season by grinding out 16 kill snad 18 assists. Avery Helmuth led the Golden Hawks with 25 assists. Caliel Huber and Harper Pacha had 12 and 10 kills each, and Pacha added four service aces.
Dakota Mitchell finished the night with a team-leading 24 digs. Lanee Duwa collected 18 digs, and Jovi Evans had 17 digs.
