DONNELLSON — The Pekin girls cross-country team went into Thursday night’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet looking to beat out a hungry Danville team for the 2023 title, and that’s just what the Panthers did.
Pekin put three runners in the Top-6 and scored 32 points, beating out the Bears by 12 points to earn this year’s conference championship.
The Panthers were led by Chloe Glosser, who racked up her second SEISC title in wwo ears. Glosser was the only girl under 10 minutes, finishing in 19 minutes, 54.6 seconds.
Glosser was the only Panther in the Top-4, but Lauren Steigleder and Audrey Fariss finished fifth and sixth to give the Panthers a huge advantage. Steigleder finished fifth, in 21:41.3, and Fariss took sixth, in 21:52.5.
Pekin’s Lexi Swearingen took 15th. Abby Guise rounded out the Panthers’ scorers with a 20th-place finish.
Although Hillcrest Academy didn’t have enough runners to score, the Ravens showed a ton of promise with two underclassmen in the Top-20. That included freshman Marie Yoder, who took second place in her first-ever conference meet, crossing the tape in 20:48.9.
Hillcrest’s Rya Scott also had a nice finish. She took 19th place to give the Ravens a second Top-20 finisher.
Columbus took third as a team, thanks in part to a seventh-place finish by Iris Garza. Garza, another freshman, crossed the tape in 21:57.8 to lead the Wildcats.
The Wildcats had two runners in the Top-23. Ariana Vergara took 14th, and Isabel Rendon finished 23rd.
Van Buren County didn’t have enough runners to score, but the Warriors had two runners in the Top-12. Kayley Snowgren took eighth place, in 22:46.2, and Rylee Phillips finished 12th, in 23:17.
Also in the Top-20 was Highland’s Siena Stanerson, who finished 16th place, in 23:19.5.
In the boys’ race, Pekin’s Brady McWhirter finished in third place, just 20 seconds off the leader. McWhirter’s final time of 16:58.6 led the Panthers to a third-place finish overall.
As a team, Pekin finished with 62 points, which was just four behind Danville. Mediapolis won the meet with 50.
Pekin had three runners in the Top-11. Jaedon Wolver finished ninth, and Mason Dahlstrom was 11th.
Pekin had two more runners in the Top-20. Lane Fariss took 19th, and Cole Millikin was 20th.
Van Buren County was fourth in the boys’ race, scoring 137 points. The Warriors finished one point ahead of Louisa-Muscatine.
Lincoln Bainbridge led the Warriors with a fourth-place time of 17:11.1. Gavin Noll took 16th, and Landry Loeffler was 22nd.
Columbus finished sixth, despite having no runner sin the Top-15. Damian Vergara’s 17th-place time of 18:39.7 helped that cause, as did a 21st-place finish from Cade Storm.
Winfield-Mount Union was seventh, scoring 151 points. Kohlby Newsom took 10th, in 18:10.4, and Gabriel Hemsworth was 13th, in 18:19.6.
Hillcrest Academy was 10th place on the boys’ side. Highland took 11th.
