COLUMBUS — They say third times a charm, but that’s especially true when you’ve already won the first two. That was the reality for Pekin junior Chloe Glosser, who was looking for her third Southeast Iowa Super Conference title on Tuesday night at Cedarcrest Country Club in Columbus.
Glosser, who won the SEISC race as a freshman and a sophomore, made it three-straight by crossing the line in 19 minutes, 14.8 seconds to grab another conference title.
“It’s just really special,” Glosser said. “It’s just all part of God’s work.”
Glosser helped the Panthers lock up a team title, as Pekin scored 76 points. The Panthers won the meet by 22 points over second place Hillcrest Academy.
“It’s super exciting,” Glosser. “This season got off to a slow start, but we’re kicking it in the right time.”
The Panthers widened their lead on the rest of the conference. Last year, Pekin won the SEISC meet by just 12 points over Danville-New London.
“This year especially was good,” said Pekin head coach Davis Eidahl. “Before the season even started, we lost probably our number two and three runners. The girls, little by little, started working.”
Hillcrest Academy took second place, thanks in large part to two runners finishing in the Top-4. Marie Yoder took second place, for the second year in a row, and Siena Stanerson ended up in fourth.
Columbus and WACO took eighth and ninth respectively in the girls’ team race.
On the boys’ side, the top area runner was WACO’s Jude Dykstra. Dykstra challenged eventual Top-2 Jackson Shacklett of Danville and Will Schmidgall of Mediapolis till the bitter end, before finishing third, in 17:03.4.
“I don't think I was ready,” said Dykstra, who was coming off a meet off due to illness and injury. “I skipped out last meet, because I wasn't feeling great, and I just didn't feel right for this one.”
Dykstra was the first of a wave of area boys. Lincoln Bainbridge of Van Buren County finished fourth. Ty Muniz of Columbus was fifth. Kohlby Newsom of Winfield-Mount Union was seventh. Van Buren County’s Landry Loffler took eighth, and Pekin had two in the Top-10, a ninth-place finish from Mason Dahlstrom and a 10th place result from Cole Millikin.
Team wise, Columbus took third, falling one back of Mediapolis and three ahead of Van Buren County. Pekin was fifth. WACO took seventh. Hillcrest Academy was eighth.
