CEDAR RAPIDS ? Trey Sathoff cleared a career-best 6-feet, 8-inches to win the high jump and Pekin blew away the rest of the field at the Coe Kohawk Relays in Cedar Rapids Monday.
The Panthers won 17 of the 18 events and piled up a whopping 232 team points to win the meet. Marion was a distant second with 90 points.
?We realize the competition was not great, but anytime we can run everyone and they can compete in three to four events, that is how you build and develop a good track program,? said head coach Davis Eidahl, who hosted the meet. ?That is what we took away from it.?
Sathoff?s leap is two inches better than his previous career best of 6-feet, 6-inches and is the second-best mark reported in the entire state of Iowa this spring. Solon?s Nick Day has cleared 6-feet, 9-inches.
Monday, Sathoff was pushed by Olin?s Jordan Cress, who has also cleared 6-feet, 8-inches this year but settled for second place with a best jump of 6-feet, 6-inches.
Bryce Sines also starred for the Panthers as he won the 100-meter dash (11.14), 200-meter dash (23.21) and the long jump (19? 5.5?).
Pekin will hope to carry this success into Thursday?s trip to Mount Pleasant for the Denny White Relays.
Panther girls end up third
CEDAR RAPIDS ? Brenna Conger carried the distance crew and sprinters filled in the rest of the way as the Pekin girls? track and field team wound up in third place at the Coe Kohawk Relays Monday.
Solon was the team champ with 172 while North Linn was second with 131 and Pekin scored 111.
Conger won both the 3,000 (11:48.33) and 1,500 (5:32.25) meter runs to lead the Panther charge.
Cheyann Lankford came up with second-place results in the 100-meter dash (13.30) and as the anchor to the 4x100 team that finished in 54.69. Jessi Martin, Leslie Stone and Miranda Baker led off the relay.
Other runners-up include Samantha Wright in the 400-hurdles (1:14.74), Emily Ellis in the 100-hurdles (16.99) and Brandy Millikin in the shot put (34? 9?).
Next up for Pekin is the Pantherette Relays on its home track Thursday evening. Field events are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
