Pekin rolls on homecoming, Mid-Prairie wins 3rd straight
Panthers stay undefeated, Mid-Prairie picks up conference victory

Week 5 small school football festivities saw Pekin keep its undefated season rolling with a victory of Van Buren County on homecoming. The Panthers (5-0, 4-0 Class A District 5) have put up 52 points in two of their last three games - they received a 17-0 forfeit win over Highland in between wins over VBC and Wapello.
Elsewhere, Sigourney Keota dominated on both sides of the ball in a Thursday night matchup against Louisa-Muscatine. Mid-Prairie also won its third game in a row, taking down West Liberty.
Here is how the Union area small schools did in under the lights in Week 5.
Pekin 52, Van Buren County 8
Pekin gave its fans plenty to cheer about on homecoming as it trounced district foe VBC. The Panthers had a 22-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter thanks to three Nolan Glick touchdowns, including runs of 60 and 57 yards.
Glick finished the day with 312 yards and four TDs on 24 carries and added two receiving touchdowns. Henry Adam had an extremely efficient day on the ground with 105 yards and a touchdown on just two carries. Riley Smith completed 7 of 14passes for 101 yards and two scores.
For VBC, Will Cocherell completed 14 of 34 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Junior Quaid Harryman was on the receiving end of the Warriors lone score.
Pekin will look to keep its undefeated season going against North Mahaska on Friday. VBC (1-4, 0-3 A-5) will next face Wapello on Oct. 10.
No. 7 Mid-Praire 56, West Liberty 35
The Golden Hawks also passed the 50-point mark Friday with a Class 2A District 6 win over West Liberty. Mid-Prairie tallied 553 yards of offense in the win.
Brooks Weber completed nearly 82% of his passes for 306 yards and six touchdowns with just one interception. Hudson Ehrenfelt did most of the heavy lifting on the ground with 179 yards and two touchdowns and led the way in receiving with 97 yards and a score through the air.
Kaden Kos caught two of Weber’s six TD passes. Mid-Prairie also had three interceptions and recovered a fumble on defense.
Mid-Prairie (4-1, 2-0 2A-6) will look to play spoiler on Central Lee’s homecoming Friday. The Golden Hawks carry an eight game head-to-head win streak into the matchup.
Sigourney Keota 69, Louisa-Muscatine 0
Despite the Golden Hawks and Panthers best efforts, it Sigourney Keota who took the title for the highest scoring area team in Week 5. The Cobras demolished Louisa-Muscatine to get their second win of the season.
Sigourney Keota did all that scoring despite just two completions for quarterback Brayden Wood. He did throw a 15-yard touchdown to Ayden Galindo, but it was the Cobras rushing attack that led the way Thursday.
Seven Cobras players scored a rushing touchdown, including two each for Ike Molyneux and Carson O'Rourke. Sigourney Keota finished with 302 yards and nine scores on the ground.
The Cobras (2-3, 2-0 Class 1A District 6) will look to get to .500 against undefeated Regina Catholic. The Regals (5-0, 2-0 1A-6) have district wins over Durant and Cardinal.
Belle Plaine 34, WACO 24
The Warriors couldn’t muster enough offense Friday, dropping their second game in a row at the hands of Bell Plaine. WACO (3-2, 2-1 Class 8-player District 5) now sits in third place in the district standings.
Hayden Shelman threw for a touchdown and rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries in the loss. Trey Edeker had 61 yards and a pair of scores on 10 carries. Casey Coakley was on the end of Shelman’s touchdown pass and led the way in receiving with 61 yards.
WACO will look to bounce back against English Valleys on Friday. The Warriors will host the Bears at 7 p.m. at WACO High School.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 53, Cardinal 12
The Comets were down just 14-6 after a quarter of play on homecoming. But they would be unable to slow down EBF’s offense and remain in search for their first win of the season.
Alijah Frase completed 20 of 37 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Treyton Hafele and Cayden Courtney each had TD catches for the Comets.
Cardinal (0-5, 0-2 1A-6) will next head on the road to face Durant on Friday.
No. 4 Iowa Valley 69, Winfield-Mt Union 22
The Wolves came up short against one of the top eight player sides in the state. The Tigers offense scored 27 points in the first quarter and WMU was unable to mount a successful comeback.
Freshman Graham Haines completed 8 of 14 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown for WMU. Kade Sweezer and Treyton Kellogg each recorded a rushing touchdown and helped account fro 149 yards on the ground for the Wolves.
WMU (1-4, 1-2 8-player-5) will continue district play against HLV/TC on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at HLV Community School Athletic Complex.
