Pekin rolls on Homecoming night
Area small school scoreboard: Columbus runs over VBC, WACO ends regular season strong

The Union area small schools are just one week away from playoff time. Here’s how the area fared on the second-to-final night of the regular season.
Pekin 57, Wapello 0
The Pekin football team ran over yet another district opponent, slicing up Wapello 57-0 for a Homecoming victory.
The Panthers busted the game open right away, scoring 23 points in the first quarter and going up 37-0 at halftime.
Pekin put up 20 points in the third quarter despite being sped up by a running clock.
Pekin’s offense rushed for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Will Adam led the way with 87 yards and a score, while also throwing for 55 yards and one touchdown.
Nolan Glick went for 68 yards and a touchdown. Henry Adam rumbled for 37 and a score, and both Landon Crow and Alijah Brock eclipsed the 35-yard mark. Kasey Davis’ 42-yard touchdown catch accounted for most of the receiving yards on the day.
Pekin scored twice on defense. Landon Crow recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Davis had a 33-yard pick-six. Glick also picked off one pass.
Columbus 48, Van Buren County 7
Van Buren County’s stout defense wasn’t sharp enough to slow down a hungry Columbus offense. The Wildcats put 41 points on the board in the opening half and never looked back.
Riley Kaalberg dashed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Tyson Kaaalberg went for 96 yards and a score, and Juan Chairez ran for 67 yards and a touchdown. Trevor Phillips hit Tyson Kaalberg for his only touchdown pass.
Van Buren County’s only score was a touchdown pass from Will Cocherell to Aiden McEntee.
Highland 41, Louisa-Muscatine 6
Highland snapped a four-game losing streak with a 35-point blasting of Louisa-Muscatine, as the Huskies won their third game of the season.
Jose Ramirez ran for 108 yards and two scores to lead the Highland offense. Sage Hartley-Norman ran for 60 yards and a score, while also throwing a touchdown pass to Ayden Havel. Colten Sypherd scored once on the ground.
No. 9 (1A) Sigourney-Keota 62, Colfax-Mingo 26
Sigourney-Keota rolled to victory in Colfax, staying undefeated in district play to lock up at least a share of the title.
Isaac Bruns went wild again, rushing for 164 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching a touchdown pass from Brayden Wood. Wood, Chase Clarahan and Jacob Libe all scored on the ground.
Pella Christian 62, Cardinal 12
Chase Johnson ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Alijah Fraise, but Cardinal remained winless after another district loss.
Mid-Prairie 48, Central Lee 14
The Golden Hawks locked up a share of the district title, and like SK could take it alone with a win next week.
Mid-Prairie led 34-0 at halftime, never trailing in a blowout home victory.
Hudson Ehrenfelt ran foro 220 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Brady Weber ran for a score and found Cobi Hershberger on a touchdown pass.
The Golden Hawks scored once on defense, when Conner Wiles took a fumble return 18 yards to the house. Blake Swart had two interceptions, and Keegn Bauwens had one.
Moravia 36, New London 20
In one of the closer games of the weekend, New London couldn’t erase a 22-6 halftime deficit at Moravia.
Gavin Menke-Bailey threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in the loss. Cale Westerbeck and Brigham Porter each scored on touchdown catches.
Winfield-Mount Union 68, Mormon Trail 8
The Wolves whipped Mormon Trail behind a 166-yard three touchdown passing performance from Jake Edwards. Lane Genkinger ran for 99 yards and three scores and also caught three passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Tayson Samuels and Colin Anderson each scored through the air for the Wolves. Both Nicholas Sparrow and Edwards had two interceptions in the game, and both took one of those picks to the house.
WACO 60, English Valleys 12
WACO rolled past English Valleys in its last regular season game of the year.
Clayton Miller completed just four yards for 87 yards, and every one of those passes went for touchdowns. Louden Huisenga caught two, and both Gage Samo and Isaac Rich scored once.
Huisenga ran for 115 yards and two scores. Nick West scored once on the ground.
Isaac Rich picked off two passes for WACO. Miller and Niles Reichenbach each picked off one.
WACO ended the year 7-1 and will be in the Class 8-Player playoffs in two weeks.
