Pekin splits with Wapello

PACKWOOD - The Panthers defended their home court in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division girls game with a 43-22 win, but the Indians took the boys game with a 57-51 triumph over Pekin.
Wapello couldn't score a point against the Pekin girls in the first quarter and a 16-0 first-quarter score was 22-6 for Pekin at halftime, and 30-15 after three quarters.
Kerrigan Pope had 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists in the win. Erika Coleman had 10 points and seven rebounds while Sophie Wittrock had nine points and seven steals.
The boys game was a back-and-forth affair as the home team led 16-13 after the first quarter and Pekin still maintained a 24-22 advantage at halftime. A 17-12 third quarter for Wapello, which has a 3-0 record, was the difference as it led 39-34 to start the fourth quarter and had a 16-15 advantage to hold on for the win.
Brock Long tallied 19 points for the Panthers and grabbed four rebounds. Chandler Stull added 12 points. Brayden Sobaski supplied 11 points, four rebounds, four blocks and three steals in the Panthers first loss.
