Pekin sprinters earn medals at state meet

DES MOINES ? The Pekin boys? track and field team didn?t make it to the final day of competition at the state track meet but still grabbed a pair of medals Friday before heading home.
The distance medley team of Chase Copeland, Quentin Garrels, Christian Wittrock and Eli Harper earned an eighth-place medal for Pekin with a finish in 4:43.02. Copeland, Garrels, Christian Wittrock and Keaton Winn also finished eighth in the 4x200 in 1:33.59.
Other top finishes for Pekin came in the shuttle hurdle relay, where Colton Lanman, Tanner Adam, Chase Earnest and Cory Loyd were less than a half second shy of qualifying for the finals (ninth, 1:01.51); Loyd finishing 11th in the 400-meter hurdles (58.06); and Eric Adam placing 11th in the shot put (47? 5?). Adam also claimed 24th place in the discus (97? 2?).
Copeland, Winn, Garrels and Christian Wittrock were 13th in the 4x100 (45.41), and Graham Wittrock, Cade Millikin, Austin Fariss and Harper ended up 17th in the 4x800 (8:31.56).
In other area action, Cardinal?s shuttle hurdle relay team of Jonathan Pedersen, Tyler Albert, Neil Urtado and Charlie Rachford finished 19th in the Class 2A prelims in 1:02.19. Van Buren?s Brayden Starnes, Garrett Saunders, Wyatt Cole and Thomas Fitzsimmons finished 13 seconds behind Pekin in the 4x800, earning 23rd place in 8:44.
