WAPELLO — The Pekin basketball teams went 2-0 in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division battle in Wapello on Thursday night.
The Panther girls survived a tough battle, holding off Wapello in the fourth quarter to take home a 43-38 victory. The Pekin boys used a strong second half to win 62-49.
The Panther girls won each of the first three quarters, but all close, as Pekin held a 10-9 advantage after one quarter, a 24-19 advantage at halftime and a 37-30 lead after three quarters.
Wapello made a run in the fourth, led by a defense that held Pekin to just six points, but the Panthers had enough juice to hold on for the win.
Alex Parsons and Anna Hadley were quite the one-two punch in the win. Parsons hit a trifecta of 3-pointers en route to an 18-point night. Hadley went for 16 points, 18 rebounds and three steals.
Chloe Glooser put up three points for the Pekin girls. Renae Eubanks and Aggy Guise each scored two.
After going into halftime with just a 25-21 lead, Pekin cruised in the final two quarters of the game. The Panthers outscored the Indians 19-12 in the third quarter and 18-16 in the fourth.
Pekin boys’ stats were not yet available for this contest.
