DES MOINES — It took one-and-a-half days to get the Union area’s first state champion, and when the time finally struck on Friday afternoon, it was a familiar face in the winner’s circle.
Pekin’s Anna Hadley came into the 2025 state track meet with two state titles, a discus championship in 2023 and a shot put championship in 2024. After failing to go back-to-back in the shot put one day prior, she needed a win in the discus to keep her streak alive.
Not only did Hadley reclaim her discus title, but she did it in style. Hadley launched the discus 150 feet, 9 inches, winning the competition by over 12 feet.
“It felt great, because I was really down about shot put,” Hadley said.
Hadley went up for good on her second throw, launching it 141-01. She threw her third attempt 149.02, then topped that on her sixth, eclipsing 150 for the first time, and setting a new Class 1A state record.
“I was awe-struck,” Hadley said. “I knew I was having trouble with all of my throws, with reading them. I jokingly said before I went on, ‘with how long it’s taking, it better be 150.’”
Hadley threw the shot put 37-04.50 on Thursday, earning three points. Her discus championship gave her 13 total, which combined with Pekin’s Chloe Glosser’s 14-point weekend to put the Panthers in the Top-10.
Pekin ended the 2025 state meet with 27 points, tied with Lake Mills for 10th.
