Washington led Fort Madison 2-0 at halftime of Monday?s Southeast Conference match at Case Field, but the Bloodhounds rallied to force overtime and then won 3-2 when the match went to penalty kicks.
?That was the second year in a row we?d gone to penalty kicks with Fort Madison, and it was the second time it was unsuccessful,? Washington head coach Steven Caulk said.
Juniors Mason Quigley and Amado Marcelino scored goals in the first half as the Demons took a 2-0 halftime lead. But the Bloodhounds (2-8, 1-6 SEC) buckled down on defense and scored two goals after halftime to send the match to overtime.
Both teams went scoreless in the two overtime periods, sending the match to penalty kicks. Quigley was the only Demon to convert a penalty kick, while Fort Madison made four of the shots to win the match.
?Quigley converted one penalty kick, and they made four. It wasn?t pretty,? Caulk said. ?We had two guys miss wide and one guy miss high.?
Washington (2-7, 1-5 SEC) had defeated the Bloodhounds, who snapped an eight-match losing streak, 4-0 less than a week earlier. The Demons and Bloodhounds will meet again in a Class 2A substate quarterfinal on May 20 in Fort Madison.
?It was a matchup we could have won,? Caulk said. ?Obviously we won the week before. But we didn?t play as well as we did the week before. We looked tired, so we?re going to work on conditioning.?
