DES MOINES — The Washington track teams qualified for a total of 15 scoring events at the 2024 Iowa high school state track and field meet, but the Demons had just one event that scored points.
Coming from the first of two heats, sophomore Ryen Pepper flew to a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A girls’ 400-meter hurdles. Pepper crossed the tape in 1 minutes, 6.70 seconds.
Pepper won the first heat and nearly made the podium. She finished just under three seconds faster than teammate and fellow sophomore Leighton Messinger, who took 15th, in 1:09.51.
Pepper scored five points for the Demon girls with her Top-4 finish.
The Demon boys nearly had points in both of the long distance races. Micah Rees finished ninth in the 3200, crossing the tape in 9:35.50, and he took 10th in the 1600-meter race, finishing in 4:25.53.
The closest Demon girl to score besides Pepper was Iris Dahl, who finished 13th in the 1500, ending the race in 5:02.58.
