IOWA CITY ? The Maharishi School boys? tennis team is no stranger to the team sweep, but Thursday the Pioneers found themselves on the unfamiliar end of the broom.
The Pioneers were handed a 9-0 loss by perennial Class 2A contender Iowa City West at West High. The Trojans, who are now 3-0, won all but one set against the Pioneers in the dual meet.
Pioneer head coach Lawrence Eyre wasn?t interested in mincing words following the loss.
?We got schooled by an impressive Iowa City West team,? said Eyre. ?We have a lot of improving to do in both singles and doubles play.?
Raphael Gelfand?s second set at No. 4 singles was the only set the Pioneers won in the meet. Gelfand, a junior, would go on to lose the third set tiebreaker 10-7.
The 1-1 Pioneers now look to another group of Trojans with Fairfield set to host the crosstown rivalry match Monday.
