FAIRFIELD - The Maharishi tennis team played in its second-straight nail-biter on Thursday. This time, however, the Pioneers came up short.
Maharishi fell 5-4 against Keokuk, dropping to 1-1 overall this season.
The Pioneers went 3-3 in singles matches. Budhil Thijm won the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-2. Jayanta Wegman won the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-0, and Dominic DuPoux won the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-0.
DuPoux and Wm Nguyen won the No. 3 doubles match, making DuPoux the only Pioneer to rack up two wins.
“Very happy for Dominic,” said Maharishi coach Steve Briggs. “We weren’t sure whether he would play or not due to an ailment.”
In singles competition. Romil Patel lost the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-2. James Nguyen fell 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 2 match. Polo Altinski-Ross lost 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 match.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Nguyen and Thijm fell 8-3, and the No. 2 team of Patel and Wegman fell 8-1.
The Maharishi boys will travel to Davis County today (Monday). The Pioneer girls will be at home against Centerville.
Maharishi’s girls team will come into that match at 1-0. The Pioneer girls doused Notre Dame 9-0 in its opener last week.
