Despite games being canceled or postponed, the high school basketball regular season is heading to a close and the postseason will soon be opening.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the district groupings for Class 1A and 2A boys teams but has not paired them yet. Class 3A and 4A will be released Friday.
The state will seed the teams. Each district will have a No. 8 seed vs. a No. 9 seed game that will be played Monday, Feb. 11. The winner of that contest will play the top seed Thursday, Feb. 14.
Several districts will also have a No. 7 vs. No. 10 game that will be played Feb. 11. The winner of that contest will play the No. 2 seed Feb. 14. District finals will be played Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The IHSAA will make every attempt to place schools on the bracket based on this seeding system. However, Board of Control policy allows the administrative staff to use geography to limit unnecessary travel on member schools.
Area districts of note in 1A are District 7 and District 8. The winner of those two districts will play Saturday, Feb. 23, for the right to go to state.
Highland and Iowa Mennonite School, which both currently have a 9-5 record, are in District 7 with Alburnett (10-4), Belle Plaine (12-3), Calamus-Wheatland (12-3), Cedar Valley Christian School (0-15), English Valleys (2-12), Iowa Valley (3-12), Lisbon (6-9) and Springville (9-7).
Keota (10-6) and WACO (11-3) are in District 8 with Cardinal (0-13), Holy Trinity Catholic (4-10), Lone Tree (5-7), No. 4 New London (15-0), Notre Dame (10-4), Pekin (13-2) and Winfield-Mt. Union (1-13).
In Class 2A, District 7 and District 8 will play to go to state Feb. 23.
Columbus (1-13) is in District 7 with No. 9 Camanche (12-2), Louisa-Muscatine (3-12), Wapello (9-5), West Branch (12-3) and Wilton (3-12).
Mid-Prairie (8-7) is in District 8 with Central Lee (1-12), Danville (7-8), Mediapolis (10-3), Iowa City Regina (12-2) and West Burlington (7-5).
The state tournament will be played Monday, March 4-Friday, March 8.
