Thursday night marks the first night in Iowa high school girls basketball postseason play, and a few area teams will be in action on Night 1.
While Class 2A and 3A don’t start until Saturday, and Class 4A action won’t pick up until next week, the Union area has five teams set to lift off.
One of Thursday night’s contests will be a battle of two Union area teams, as WACO (17-4) and Keota (7-14) square off in the Class 1A Region 8 opener. That game will be played at WACO High School at 7 p.m.
That game is a rematch of a regular season game played at Keota, where WACO pulled out a 55-21 victory.
At the same time, New London (0-21) will tip off at Notre Dame (16-6). Winners from those two games will play on Tuesday night.
Also on the top side of the Region 8 bracket is No. 8 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union (19-1). The Wolves will wait on the winner of the Wapello-Holy Trinity Catholic matchup, which like the others, will take place on Thursday night.
Hillcrest Academy (0-19) will have their hands full in Region 3, as the Ravens travel to Montezuma (17-3), a team that is favored to get to the regional championship.
Highland (9-12) will be hitting the road in Region 3 as well. The Huskies will play at English Valleys (13-7). Region 3 has the same tip time as Region 8, as all area teams will begin play at 7 p.m.
