Mid-Praririe girls start strong
The Mid-Prairie girls? golf team opened up postseason play with a strong start, and they will see more action next week.
The Golden Hawks hosted their own first-round regional qualifier at the Kalona Golf Club on Monday, and came away in second place with a team score of 415.
That second-place finish is good enough to advance to the second round of regionals for Class 3A, where they will compete for a state berth.
Mid-Prairie senior Ally Wertz was the meet medalist for the day, carding a 76, followed by Centerville?s Cheyenne Chapman, who notched an 88.
Centerville won the meet with a 387.
?I was so proud of the kids today and how they all played,? Mid-Prairie girls? golf head coach Tracy McArtor said. ?We talked about scores we needed to shoot to be competitive and the girls did exactly that. We knew we would probably be playing for the second spot with the way Centerville scores, and we?ll take it.?
Behind Wertz?s 76, Paige Slabaugh notched a 101, while Abby Statler carded a 117 and Olivia Nisly had a 121 to round out the counting scores.
Lindsey Palmer notched a 122, while Kenzie Bontrager carded a 127 to make up the scratch scores for the day.
Mid-Prairie will play again on Monday in West Liberty, where they will take on Davenport Assumption, West Liberty and Centerville, with the top two teams qualifying for the state meet.
?If the kids can do there what they did today or maybe even a bit better, then I think they have a decent chance of moving on,? McArtor said. ?I?m excited that they have the opportunity and look forward to playing.?
